COMMUNICATIONS OFFICER (Dispatcher)

The Harrisonville Police Department is now accepting applications for a full-time Communications Officer (Dispatch). 

Applicants must be 18 years of age and possess a high school diploma or GED. Applicants will be required to undergo a CVSA examination, extensive background investigation, oral review board and post-offer pre-employment drug screen. Desirable qualifications to work in a 9-1-1 dispatch center are typing, telephone skills and verbal/written communication skills. Applicants must be willing to work 12-hour shifts, night shifts, and holidays. Upon hire, applicants will also be required to pass MULES, NCIC, and Medical Priority Dispatch training for Police, Fire and Ambulance.

FIREFIGHTER/EMT - Full-Time

Harrisonville, Missouri is a fourth class city located 30 miles south of Kansas City, MO, with a population of approximately 10,000. 

Harrisonville Emergency Services is a department with up-to-date equipment and state-of-the-art EMS equipment. The department currently employs 21 full-time personnel, including command staff, that performs the challenging work of emergency medical care, fire suppression, fire prevention and rescue. The fire department operates a 24-hour Modified Berkley Schedule. The department operates one ALS engine, and two fully staffed ALS ambulances from one station.

JOB RESPONSIBILTIES 

•    Responds to emergency situations and incident to suppress fires, affect rescues/extrications, participated in searches, mitigate hazardous materials and perform other duties as assigned and capable.

•    Operate firefighting tools, aerial equipment, emergency medical equipment, extrication and rescue equipment and a variety of related tools and vehicles.

•    Provide basic life support and emergency medical care.

•    Participates in on-going technical and physical training to maintain certifications.

•    Cleans and performs routine maintenance and minor repairs to department facilities.

•    Participates in fire prevention and safety education/promotional events. Conducts station tours and gives presentations and demonstrates the use of the fire suppression and safety equipment.

•    Assists in documenting incident and provides incident information to appropriate agencies and supervisor.

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS

•    Possession of a valid state driver’s license

•    High school diploma or equivalent.

•    Missouri EMT-B Certification

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

•    Vocational/technical training in firefighting and emergency medical treatment with two years of firefighting and EMT experience or any combination of education and experience that provides equivalent knowledge, skills, and abilities.

•    Possession of EMT-B certification, Firefighter I & II (preferred), hazardous materials operation, advanced life support, and basic life support certifications (CPR-Health Care Provider).

ELECTRIC DEPARTMENT ADMINISTRATIVE ASSISTANT

Ensure the office of the Electric Department function as smoothly as possible by providing a full range of support services including dispatch.

RESPONSIBILITIES

1.    Type letters, memos and other documents from dictation, draft or direction provided by the Electrical Superintendent.  Develop contracts, databases forms and bid and rejection documents.

2.    Answer and screen incoming calls for the Electrical Superintendent using discretion and interpretation of City policies and procedures to assist caller.

3.    Establish a filing procedure and ensure that documents are filed promptly for easy retrieval.

4.    Coordinate, produce, and enterRP3 required information into the APPA E-Reliability Tracker.

5.    Be available for emergency situations after hours, weekends, and holidays to assist the Director in dispatching electrical crews and answer phones.  

6.    Compose standard correspondence without instruction from the Electric Superintendent.

7.        Maintain confidentiality and utilize discretion when performing all functions.   

8.    Conducts research on electrical issues, including analysis and recommendations regarding programs and services.  Maintains information and data sources necessary to respond to requests for information.

9.      Assist in preparing operating and capital budgets for the department.

KNOWLEDGE/SKILLS/LICENSURE/CERTIFICATION

High School diploma or GED required.  Ability to relate to public, the Board of Aldermen and City employees required.  Ability to speak and write effectively and to take notes accurately required.  Ability to work under time constraints with multiple projects and issues required.  Ability to use computer with spreadsheets and word processing required.

Three to five years in responsible secretarial positions required.  Electric utility experience preferred.

Normal office equipment including personal computers.

ROUTINE CONTACTS

Director and other departmental personnel.  General public, vendors, developers, elected officials and city staff by telephone and in person.

Physical Demands

The incumbent will have to spend long hours sitting and using office equipment and computers which can cause muscle strain. The incumbent may also have to do some light lifting of supplies and materials from time to time.

Environmental Conditions

The incumbent may have to manage a number of projects at one time, and may be interrupted frequently to meet the needs and requests of co-workers, citizens, clients, contractors, etc. The incumbent may find the environment to be busy, noisy and will need excellent organizational, time and stress management skills to complete the required tasks.

Sensory demands include use of the computer, which may cause eyestrain and occasional headaches. The office may be noisy and busy making it difficult for the incumbent to concentrate. The incumbent will have to manage a number of requests and situations.

• Possession of EMT-P certification, Firefighter I & II, hazardous materials operation, advanced life support, and basic life support certifications (ACLS, PALS, BTLS, CPR-Health Care Provider).
